Since the origin of man and earth, the sun has provided us with an abundant source of power. An energy source so much it has illuminated our planet for millions of years. Only in recent years has man been able to know how to implement this to our lives.

Sadly, we are only using a diminutive amount compared to what is available to us. The main reason is the lack of technology we own. We have recognized of its potential since early man was born but we are limited by the equipments we have to utilize this effectively. Part of this issue fall under the lack of commitment to fund more researches to get a move on its improvement. If we look at the time line of solar power development we will see that the most advancement we achieve happens in times where available energy sources are low. During the oil crisis of 1973, it made progress with solar panels which brought the price down from $100/watt to $7/watt. Then early 20th century when petroleum and coal availability increased the progression of this renewable energy technology halted. The maturity of solar technology should not be halted or retarded by our false belief that petroleum, coal or any other current non-renewable energy sources would never come to an end.

Presently, we are faced with the effects of using too much non-renewable power sources. Greenhouse gasses are exponentially increasing causing problems we have been dealing with. Using solar power is clean, proficient and we have unlimited supply that is free. Making renewable energy part of our lives will minimize the necessity to burn off the limited resources that we have. Petroleums are a thing of the past, we have to learn to move on and evolve faster.

The sunlight that we received can be used in various ways. It can be used indirectly by concentrating sun rays to get heat energy to power heat engines which in turn give us electrical energy to be used at home. We can also solar power actively and directly using solar panels or photovoltaics (PV). Photovoltaics convert sunlight to electricity. PVs can also be used passively harnessing sunbeams and using heat to heat up homes, for hot water, distillation and much more.

There is much more room for growth for solar power. Some experimental areas being explored are concentrated photovoltaics, thermoelectric and space-based solar power. With so many alternative ideas and so much we can improve on the available solar technology, it is only human creativity that is holding us back.
