Instead, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight razor was used. It looks scary, but it is the smoothest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so good.
The men would principally banter about sports or politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to relax and get to know everyone a little better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly try to get out as soon as you can.
As I walk by the local barber shop and see the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I wonder why this ritual has mostly disappeared from our culture.
