Small Breed Puppy Training Exactly why dog lovers have this preconceived belief that small breed pups are more challenging to condition than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, in spite of its size should never be a problem.
Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy of any other larger sized breed. Although training any dog will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, most all other aspects remain similar, and the approach to training the dog should remain the same, not withstanding its size.
However, I will stray from the rule here, and agrree that small dog training may pose problems in two facets, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed dog is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a smaller breed puppy cannot be potty trained or poses obstacles in being potty trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this situation. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Smaller dogs are enjoyed because they are pretty, they are like toys. Owners enjoy having their doggy sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the problem starts. The basic aggressive nature of the puppy, is to assert ownership over its domain, its food, even its master; all pups want to be the alpha dog.
It is the ruthless streak in the canine animal that provokes it to get on to the lap of its mistress, particularly when there are a number of people sitting in the room.
This is a blatant act of ruthlessness. Instead of admonishing the pup, every owner with the exception of no one, would hug the pup, although it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, promoting the aggressive streak in the animal. In this way the owner has accepted the pup's inherent need to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a bigger dog is another blatant act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people who witness it, this is looked on as cute, mainly because one dog is little while the other is large. Most owners praise the pup instead of checking it, when it demonstrates this aggression against a larger dog.
What is stated above are but examples as to why small size breed dogs are aggressive, and not because small dog training is problematic.
Potty Training.
Owners have a propensity to carry their small dogs around where ever they go, even at home and that makes it very difficult to bathroom train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of small breed dogs to lug the animal to the place where the dog should do its dirty business and then tote it back into the house.
It is this habit of carrying the pup to its appointed toilet area that is the root of all problems. In addition, ever since the pup is by and large carried around all the time it has no way of it indicating to or warning the owner that it has to go the toilet.
Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be shown their potty area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their small sized dogs they would be very successful in training them.
Dog crate training, is the best part of puppy training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
