Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Connection Between Coping Skills And Alcohol Abuse, And The Need For Coping Skills Education Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol abuse experts argue that wine, liquor, and beer advertisements produced by the media are a primary reason for the expansion of teen alcohol abuse.
Other chemical dependency experts believe that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and convenience of alcohol. Still other alcohol abuse professionals emphasize the point that quite a few of our young people engage in alcohol abuse due to the increased fretfulness that they experience.
From a somewhat different perspective, since both parents in more than a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision certainly has to play a fundamental role in the increase in teenage alcohol abuse. And finally, diverse chemical dependency professionals assert that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due, at some level, to our permissive society.
One aspect of teen alcohol abuse that looks as if it somewhat missing in the alcohol dependency research literature, however, is the shortage of educational courses that teach students how to enhance their coping skills so that their careless drinking behavior is fundamentally diminished or eradicated. Stated differently, science has made obvious the fact that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and alcohol abuse.
Essentially, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the prevalence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a correct statement, why isn't coping skills education an important part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?
Let us manufacture a scenario for for the purpose of elucidation. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to develop first-class coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more rewarding way, as opposed to others who fail to implement their coping skills.
More to the point, students who reveal sound coping skills will be more able to think proactively and engage in top quality decision making as opposed to adolescents who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop good coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of abusive and unhealthy drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if students not only received first-rate coping skills instruction but also obtained an outstanding education that focused on the short term and long term injurious costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills instruction, it is pronounced, would help teenagers avoid the apparent appeal associated with youth drinking and, as a result, would significantly reduce the destructive drinking behavior undertaken by adolescents in our country.
There are surely many defensible reasons why so many of our teens abuse alcohol. Such a complex issue demands a far-reaching and more meaningful response by our parents, politicians, students, and educators so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more fruitful and accountable way rather than resorting to careless and excessive drinking to solve their difficulties.
