A Volatile High School Student Manifests More Than A Few Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Suspended From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting quite a few alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be permitted to return to class.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school expulsion to his Mother and Father. His parents were "relatively traditional" and explained to Stephen that dropping out of school was not a satisfactory educational option. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would more likely than not be like a lead weight around his ankles that may impair his educational attainment for the rest of his adult life. Furthermore, Stephen's Mom and Dad were extremely let down that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.

It was apparent that his Mom and Dad were on the same page as Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he had better make plans to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his conversation with his Mother and Father, Stephen finally agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next afternoon after school.

When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she promptly analyzed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related actions were such a cause for concern.

Quite honestly, Stephen questioned why the principal told him he had to see a school therapist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? In view of the fact that almost all of his friends drink as much if not more than he does, drinking really is no big issue. Stated another way, if just about everyone is drinking, why is this such a major concern?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to short-circuit his ability to function as a responsible young man. As articulated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink wine, hard liquor, wine coolers, or beer does not mean that it is the right thing to do for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was very well prepared for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that listed various drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied principally to teenagers.

After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was obvious that what Miss Pender revealed to Stephen was a real source of revelation for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to articulate the short term and the long term results of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also took the time to back up what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction facts and statistics that related to people in general, and chiefly to teens.

Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantaneously understood why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his friends anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she went over and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
