A Health And Physical Education Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only two years, she had already acquired a reputation as an educator with instructional approaches that inspired and stimulated students to learn and to think.

For example, one Friday morning at 10:00 she addressed the students in her class and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging standpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the best known signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific standpoint."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably show that someone with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that an individual displays, the greater the probability that she or he is an alcoholic."

Miss Jackson then informed the members in the class that each student would be accountable for examining three alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class by way of a twenty-five minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her classroom to go over the list and rank the top ten alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After about five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the pupils in her class that after she examines the numbers, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the pupils in her class to look over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, just about every pupil in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, virtually every individual in the class had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, specifically, "Do you feel really sick when you stop drinking?"

Miss Jackson then explained to the pupils in her class why this answer was the most unambiguous indicator of alcohol dependency. She underlined the fact that the chief difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

In essence this means that when an alcoholic abruptly stops drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcoholic, the students started to comprehend the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the excitement manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson realized that she had motivated and encouraged the pupils in her class to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our culture.
